Painless examination of changing and worrying moles with a special magnifier.
Dermoscopy is the examination of moles and other pigmented lesions with a special illuminated magnifier. It shows structures invisible to the naked eye, helps catch a suspicious change early and makes it possible to follow how a mole develops. It is painless and takes a few minutes.
Which moles need attention
A mole that grows, or a recent one that changes quickly
A mole with an irregular shape and blurred or ragged edges
A mole with several colours or uneven colour
A mole that bleeds, crusts or itches
A mole that looks different from all your other moles
What we do at the visit
I ask about your moles, any family history of skin cancer and your history of sunburn
I examine the moles that worry you, and the whole skin if needed, with a dermatoscope
For each mole we decide: no concern, needs monitoring, or should be removed and sent for histology
We photograph moles that need monitoring and keep the images for comparison
Every growth that appears on the skin deserves a careful look. A mole checked early is the easiest one to deal with.
